Philosophy of Yoga

  • The body and mind have close correlation. A sound mind has a sound body. What is this relationship in connection between a sound mind and to the body and how does it help the body to be kept healthy, is a moot point attracting the attention of neuro-physicians, scientists and psychiatrists.
    There is definite connection between the brain, emotions and immune systems and also a peaceful mind and immune system. There had been a lot of discussions on this subject in the last decade between scientists and various scholars of different walks of discipline.
    Based on scientific research it was agreed, after all this, the mind can control emotions like lust, anger etc., resulting in peace (shanthi as often repeated in many occasions in the Vedas). A mind thus controlled can bring down the blood pressure. minimizing the chances of diseases. Hence yoga, prananyam and meditation are extensively preached and practiced all over the world east west etc., to get the benefit. Medical science has shown by experiments that there is a definite correlation between mental activity and physical health. In fact physical pain could be also reduced by meditation. Many western universities like Yale, California, Harvard have shown in their studies that emotions like anger, lust, greed, stress and depression increase the risk of heart attacks by blocking the arteries suddenly. There had been many observation of uncontrolled anger often precipitating heart attacks. When one gets into fit of anger, the strength of the immune system is brought down. Whereas optimism, joy, healthy thinking, pleasant habits, positive approach to a problem and regular meditation reduce the incidence of diseases by strengthening the immune system.
    So it appears to stand and substantiate this fact that healthy and balanced mind results in a healthy body as well.


      The Cosmology of Yoga Practice

The so-called parts and isolated units of this universe are comparable to the parts of the limbs of the human body constituting this wholeness and never independent of one another. It is because of one’s narrow -mindedness that we look separately the feet from the head unable to comprehend. According to the philosophy of yoga, the universe is not one which is made of discrete particles like atoms, molecules etc. Once understand this concept if this outlook is expanded adequately he or she can visualize the cosmos as completeness. Cosmology is the doctrine of creation. How is that in creation one is looking different from the other in spite of there, this inward structure of the whole universe. The center of the universe pulsates inside out i.e. centrifugally. This is an urge for externalization in space and time. This urge that arises in the centre of the cosmos is usually known, as creation will. When things are pushed outwards from the center to its maximum, the WHOLE gets dissociated into particular individual. This is compared to our dream experience where the walking mind gets distracted. Here also the center of the mind is externalized in dream. Here we have all the experience of space and time of the cosmos and this experience of the dream is not outside our mind. Though this externalization is apparent we have all the feelings like love, hatred, desires etc due to its intensity even if it is a dream. This is what is explained in the yoga system. What has happened to us today is what has happened to the waking mind in dream. The walking mind has dissociated into various objects and retaining itself as the subject of this objectivity. The living beings totally forget the self subjectively but gets more and involved with the objects. Now we can understand how much down we have descended from the reality the cosmic totality. These yogasanas though performed various manners with different names, the purpose is the same and that is to move towards the inward cosmic energy like variegated items in food though with different taste have only one purpose that is appeasement of appetite. So these asanas help us to move from the physical to the prana level and then to the mental level and from there to the rational or the intellectual level and finally piercing through this curtain of ignorance, to the universe ultimately which is our parent. So these asanas are not just physical acts but makes us hale and healthy and personally strong both in mind and body giving the power to stand on your own. This power is not merely obtained from food but is that which is descending from the UNIVERSE itself. The fixing of consciousness upon the larger dimensions of this reality beyond our physical location is the art of meditation. This gives all the power, strength, energy etc. Tis power obtains this energy from the basic five elements namely the earth, fire, water, air and either and to include also the eco system and the solar system. We draw our energy from all these.
    Because we have cut off from the WHOLE like prodigal sons by isolating deliberately ourselves. We have developed a false notion that we can be independent from running away from the parent universe not knowing the function that it cannot be there without the parent like a paralyzed limb which could be strengthened and vitalized only by its organic relation to the body. By cutting off from this parent cosmic power, dissociated we become weak physically, psychically and socially. Hence these physical exercises, the asanas are the beginning of the initial stages of movement towards this parent goal. Finally the aim is to unite with this VAST FORM. This feeling of oneness of you with this WHOLENESS expands your vision and field of activity, which could be called by any name like human consideration, love, sympathy etc. This feeling for others is an indication of your connection of this inwardness.Actually your originals are in the higher realms of existence deeper from this physical structure like great philosophers Plato etc., who had ascribed to the same view.
    There are various planes of existence of which the lower most is physical, followed .This text is mainly taken from the discourse of Swami Krishnandaji of Rishikesh delivered at Mussourie. Swamiji had conveyed here the tremendous significance of the performance of Yogasanas bringing in the UNIVERSAL context and giving one the feel of satisfaction of belonging to the whole COSMOS. The word Yoga that is attached to the asanas should throw a new vision that is behind these mere exercises. The yoga exercises are based on a cosmology in which the whole yoga system is routed. There is relevance and meaning, which go beyond these apparent exercises. This cosmology is a voluminous subject. Yoga holds the universe as a complete
