  • Pranayama

This is very importanat basic exercise for an individual to purify the breath by which the mind becomes clear with better oxygeneation and clarity in thinking and so also chanelises the concentration. It is a very effective lung exercise whereby most of the lung related chronic ailments could be got rid off and the lung potential recovers enormously almost to normal.
There are various types of Pranayama and these are arranged in systematic way where the benefit is totally obtained.

    Brahmari Pranayama

This is akin to the humming of the bee, where the chanting of the 'Aum' is performed. Already in the introduction the method of chanting Aum s described namely into three split syllables of Aaaah, Oh and im. "Aaaah" starting from the nabhi (deep from the abdoment which stimulates the base of the lungs by contracting its muscles), followed by "Oh" which is in relation to the lungs including the chest muscles also and ending with "im" where the upper respiratory tracts comes into play and in the whole effort the respiratory potentials of the person is indirectly coming into play.< br> When the first syllable 'aah' is uttered the contrating muscles of the abdomen stimulate the base of the lung. This forms the basis of asthmatics who have lost most of the base functioning due to shallow breathing and developing dead space.
One can also self assess his lung potentials by calculating the duration of the chanting Aum without interruption. The person who is able to chant for more than 45 sec. can be roughly gauged to have exvellent lung functioning,30 and 45 moderate to good but below 30 has to be analysed.

  • Sukaporvak Pranayama

Generally Prnayama is being taught with specific ratio of inhalation , holding and exhalation in the ratio 1:2:4. But as we find it difficult for people to keep track of the count during the effort, it has been modified to take enough time to comfortably inhale and exhale without holding the breath hence we call this SukapoorvakPranayama.

This should be deep inhalation and long exhalation so that there is adequate oxygenation during inhalation and washing out of carbon dioxide during exhalation. Starting the process by inhaling from the left nostril closing the right nostril and exhaling through the right nostril closing the left nostril. The positioning of hands is to keep the right hand in nostril. The positioning of hands is to keep the right hand in such a way that ring finger is on the left nostril and the thumb is on the right nostril while the left hand is kept in gyanamudra, meaning opposing the thumb and the index and the hard resting on the left thigh. This whole process is one cycle. This could be repeated for a few cycles min of 5.

  • Kumbhak

We isolate this process of holding the breathe from the conventional Pranayama. Here breathe normally for a few times and to hold the breath for a few seconds as long as possible, without strain.

  • Kapalbhati

this is a conscious process of forcibly breathing out repeatedly (conscious forcible expiration). Here it not only washing out of carbon di-oxide from the respiratory tree, which has accumulated during Kumbhak, but also strengthens the abdominal wall muscles.

  • Sithli Pranayama

This is a Pranayama variant where you breathe in though the mouth and breathe out through the nostrils by closing the mouth. With the tonguefolded on both sides. The inhaling air is felt cool on the surface of the tongue which is the normal temperature of the normal air inhaled i.e. oxygen while breathing out through the nostrils can feel the warmth of the exhaled Carbon di-oxide when you hold the back of the hand close to the nostrils. This is a regulated Pranayama like sookapoorvak Pranayama.

  • Bastrika

This is rapid regular rhythmic respiratory effort of inhalation and exhalation. A different way of bellowing the lungs for improving its elasticity.
