Chin lock
Benefits:Upper respiratory tract and the brain gets effective oxygenation and allowing enough time for gas exchange in the lower respiratory tract.
Procedure:The chin is brought down firmly over the chest so that a portion of air getting into the lungs is cut off. The head alone is to be bent with the chin resting on the upper part of the chest, a point to be stressed that there should be no holding of the breath here so that is effective oxygenation of the brain.
Prolonging life span by this locking technique
Benefits:The benefit is very much like Jalandhara Bandha but only taking the tongue folded behind cuts off large portion of air escaping through the nostrils.
Procedure:This is to fold the tongue backwards and at the same time to combine with the Jalandhara Bandha.
Remarks:Also called the Bandha dhvaya. One can experience the wind pipe being pulled up while doing this bandha.
Abdominal wall contraction
Benefits:Udhayani Bandha improves the muscle tone of the abdominal wall.
Procedure:Contract the abdominal wall tight and pushing it backward towards the spine without holding the breath.
Remarks:Beneficial for early abdominal wall hernia.
Anal sphincter contraction
Benefits:Moola Bandha improves floor muscle tone and the anal sphincter.
Procedure:Pull up the anal sphincter and keep it contracted.
Remarks:This contracting and relaxing of the anal sphincter is a practice in medicine called sitz bath where the individual sits insides a tub with warm water and performs contraction and relaxation by which the pain of the piles come down and tone of the sphincter improves.
Combination of the three bandhas together
Benefits:It is during this khumbhak there is enough time for gas exchange in the lungs and improving the blood flow to the abdominal structures.
Procedure:With Udhayni bandha and moola bandha intact bring the chin firmly down onto the chest and hold your breath that is khumbak.
